Staying/Studying in The UK Part 3 - Food
I
would just go through briefly on this one as everyone has their own preferences.
There are a few big name stores for you to choose from to buy your groceries,
but obviously it depends on where you’re staying. You may choose from Tesco,
Sainsbury’s, Asda, Marks & Spencer, Iceland and so forth. Most of them do
provide online purchase and delivers straight to your doorstep. There are Asian
stores around as well if you miss Asian food cooking, you would have to explore
or ask around though.
If
you’re busy or don’t feeling cooking, these stores do see cooked food from
pastas to roasted chicken, pies to salads. If none of those are to your liking,
and there’s an Iceland store nearby, head on there. Iceland is known to sell a
wide variety of frozen food like pizzas, pastas, rice with a side dish inside
like meat or vege, lasagne etc. All you have to do is microwave it and you’re
done. Take note that they do sell some frozen food as low as £1 but they
don’t taste nice at all, but what do you expect for a pound right! I always go
for their pizza, bacons and pastas as well as some breaded chicken breast
fillet.
If so happen that you
forgot the fact that shops in the UK closes quite early, the most common places
to eat in the evening are pubs (but not all serves food or only at certain
hours), restaurants (pricey ones usually open till late), pizza shops, Middle
eastern shops/stalls (they usually sell biryanis, curries, kebabs, pizzas etc
and they’re quite cheap). Of course depending on where you are, there may be
some hidden gems so you may need to do some exploring. Remember you always have
the right to know prices before eating and usually they do display prices
clearly otherwise it’s illegal. Another thing to note is when you’re at any
eatery but you don’t want to fork out a penny for drinks, you can ask for a
glass of tap water. It is free and it’s illegal to charge for tap water in
the UK.
Alternatively, you may consider ordering takeaway from your nearest store and a website that does just that without you having to leave your doorstep is http://www.just-eat.co.uk/. Just provide your postcode and preferred cuisine you'd like to have that night and you'll be shown a list of restaurants/ food outlet to choose from.
